The character of Billy is treated as a child, this is shown when the mother says “he’ll better if I can clean him up”, this shows how his mother still looks after him and thinks of him as a child. The detective also treats Billy as a child this is shown by the detective talking down to him and not accusing Billy normally, the detective is just hinting at an accusation, showing how he is being treated differently to what a ‘normal’ suspect would be.
