Camera shot and angles:
There are lots of Extreme close ups and close ups of the Morgan Freeman in the opening scene suggesting he is one of the main characters in the thriller film Se7en and possibly the main protagonist.
Low angle shots are used on Brad Pitts character in the opening scene to show he is not as important as Morgan Freemans character.
A low angle tracking shot is used when Pitts and Freemans characters are walking together, in this shot you see Freemans character walking calmly and Pitts character walking into people suggesting that Pitts character is new to the city and is not used to the way the city works.
Editing:
During the opening credits fast paced editing is used to show the audience that the film will generally be fast paced, this will keep the audience intrigued as they will feel that if they look away for even a second they will miss some of the film.
Sound:
Sound is used to create suspense in the thriller, during the opening scene of Freeman and Pitt walking down the city street, diegetic sound is used the try and involve the audience.
Mise-en-scene:
The thriller is clearly set in a American city, you can tell this because of the accents of the characters, also the way the characters dress suggests that they are American as they dress differently to what an English detective would. Freemans character has a smart clean cut hairstyle suggesting that is the way his character is, smart, clean and to the point, whereas Pitts character has a more rough and disorganised style suggesting that there could be more to the character than the audience initially think.
we can use this textual analysis to help us decide the way that Mise-en-scene, Sound, Editing and Camera shot and angles will be used to affect the way that characters are represented in our thriller opening.
